    “Finn do you really have to go—? It’s dangerous isn’t it?” The Princess trotted behind him to keep up, watching as her brave adventurer started to go beyond the castle grounds. Her small, tiny hands wrung together in worry as Finn turned to face her with the same carefree grin he always gave her.      “A’Course PB! It’s my job as a—-“ He paused to strike a pose, “Hero!” He smiled as he earned a tiny giggle from the Princess, if not for a moment easing her worries. She’d never been so concerned about him before; he’d thought she had always been confident he returned. His smile faltered for a moment as he thought maybe it was because 18-year-old-Bubblegum never cared for him at all; she caught his falter in confidence and rushed forward at the opportunity to hug him. Catching him off-guard as his cheeks turned a rosy red. 

“Promise to come back safe, Finn!” She said with urgency, burying her face into his chest. Finn hesitated before returning the embrace, ignoring the cat call whistle Jake made off to the side; Finn hissing for him to shut up. “Of course I’ll come back, Peebs, I’ve never let you down before.” Except you know when she…died but they don’t talk about that! “Good!” She looked up at him and poked him in the chest, “Because I’ll never forgive you if you don’t! And—and—!” Before she continued her vision was suddenly blocked, her turn to be caught off-guard as she lifted what she had discovered was Finn’s hat from over her eyes. The Princess looked up at him wide eyed and blushing as he grinned down at her. “That’s my favorite hat, alright—- well, it’s my only hat! So I’ll be back for it, you bet. So you hang on tight to it, Princess and I’ll be back before you can say Lumps!” He turned from her at last and ran out of the castle, bickering with Jake who was making embarrassing remarks. But the Princess wasn’t paying attention to those, no… she clung to the hat he’d left in her possession and held it close to her heart. Where she’d hoped Finn would always be…
